The short answer

We don’t publish a Nashville price list, because every stump and yard is different and we are not the company doing the work. What we can tell you is how companies price the job, and what the big national cost guides report:

Sources: Angi, “How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost?” (updated Oct 15, 2026); HomeGuide, “How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost?” (2026). Both checked October 19, 2026. These are national averages, not Nashville quotes. Angi notes that high-demand areas can run higher.

For full stump removal (digging out the root ball), Angi reports a national average of about $369, with most jobs between $195 and $609 (Angi stump removal cost, 2026).

7 factors that set your price

1. Stump diameter

The biggest one. Companies measure across the widest point at ground level, including any flare where the roots spread, not just the flat cut on top. Measure it before you call.

2. How many stumps

There is usually a minimum charge just to bring the machine out. After that, extra stumps on the same visit tend to cost less each, so do the whole yard at once if you can.

3. Access

A stump by the driveway is easy. One in a fenced backyard behind a narrow gate, on a steep slope or tight against a fence, deck or foundation takes a smaller machine and more time. Note your narrowest gate width.

4. Wood type and condition

Dense hardwoods take longer to grind. An old, rotted stump often goes faster than a fresh one.

5. Roots

Grinding usually covers the roots right around the stump. Long surface roots running across the yard are often extra; see root removal.

6. Depth

Standard grinding goes a few inches below grade. Going deeper, for a new tree or construction, takes longer. If you need the whole root ball out, that is stump removal, which costs more.

7. Cleanup

Leaving the chips is the cheapest option. Raking them out, hauling them off and adding topsoil are usually add-ons.

How to get an accurate quote fast

  • Measure the width of each stump at ground level.
  • Take a photo of each stump and one of the path from the street.
  • Measure your narrowest gate.
  • Note any sprinklers, invisible fence or septic lines nearby.
  • Decide whether you want the chips left, hauled or replaced with topsoil.

When you compare quotes, check that each one covers the same things: number of stumps, depth, roots and cleanup.

FAQ

Stump grinding cost FAQ

How much does it cost to grind one stump in Nashville?

There is no single Nashville price; it depends on the stump’s width, the wood, access and cleanup. As a starting point, national guides from Angi and HomeGuide put one typical stump at about $120 to $400 (checked October 2026). Get a local quote for the real number.

How do companies price stump grinding?

Most measure the stump’s diameter at ground level and charge per inch, with a minimum charge per visit. Some quote per stump, by the hour or by the day for big jobs. National guides list per-inch rates of roughly $2 to $6.

Is a second stump cheaper?

Usually. Once the machine is on site and the minimum is covered, extra stumps tend to cost less each. HomeGuide lists $30 to $60 per additional stump and Angi lists $40 to $75 (national figures).

Is hauling away the chips included?

Often not. Ask whether cleanup, haul-away and topsoil are included before you book, so quotes are comparable.

Who actually does the work?
