What stump grinding is
A stump grinder is a machine with a spinning cutting wheel lined with carbide teeth. The operator sweeps it back and forth across the stump, chewing the wood into chips until the stump is below the soil line. The roots stay in the ground and break down over time.
It is the most common way to get rid of a stump in a lawn or garden bed because it is quicker and cheaper than digging the whole thing out.

When grinding is the right call
- Stump left after tree removal. Many tree jobs cut the trunk close to the ground and leave the stump behind.
- Mowing around it. Stumps are hard on mower blades and a trip hazard in play areas.
- Sprouts coming up. Some species send up shoots from the stump; grinding below grade stops most of it.
- Rot or insects. An old, decaying stump near the house can attract pests.
- New beds or sod. Grinding clears the spot so you can fill it with soil and plant.
If you are building, pouring concrete or putting in a pool right where the stump sits, look at full stump removal instead. For roots running across the lawn, see root removal.
What happens on the day
- Utility locates. The company should have its own Tennessee 811 ticket for public lines. Mark sprinklers, invisible dog fences, lighting and septic lines yourself; 811 does not.
- Getting the machine in. Compact grinders fit through many backyard gates. Measure your narrowest gate and mention it in the quote request.
- Grinding. The stump and the biggest surface roots near it are ground down below grade.
- Cleanup. The chips are usually raked into the hole or left in a pile. Hauling them away and adding topsoil is often an add-on.
After the grind
Chips settle as they break down, so the spot may sink a bit over the following months. For grass, many people rake out most of the chips, fill with topsoil and seed or lay sod. Fresh chips can be used as mulch away from the house.

Stump grinding FAQ
How long does it take to grind a stump?
A single average stump is often a short job once the machine is in place. Big stumps, hard wood, lots of surface roots or rock take longer. The company can give you a time estimate with the quote.
How deep does stump grinding go?
It depends on the machine, the roots and any rock. A common range is several inches to around a foot below grade. If you plan to plant a new tree or build in the same spot, say so up front and ask for deeper grinding or full removal.
What happens to the wood chips?
Grinding turns the stump into a pile of chips and soil. Most companies leave it in the hole or nearby for you to use as mulch. Hauling it away and backfilling with topsoil is usually an extra charge, so ask for it in the quote.
Will the stump grow back?
Grinding below grade stops most regrowth. Some trees can push up sprouts from leftover roots for a season or so; mow or clip them and they usually give up.
Does someone need to call 811 before grinding?
Usually, yes. Tennessee 811 says anyone excavating with machinery needs their own locate request, made at least three working days ahead; the service is free. The grinding company should file its own ticket. Private lines such as sprinklers, invisible dog fences, landscape lighting and septic lines are not marked by 811, so point those out.
Who actually does the work?
An independent local stump grinding company. Nashville Stump Grinding is a referral service: we pass your request to a local pro who serves your area, and they give you the price and do the job. There is no obligation.
